Out of India came from a six-month period Sansom spent in New Delhi. During this time, Sansom made one watercolour painting each day using locally-sourced materials on archival papers. The work encapsulated his experiences with many aspects of contemporary Indian life and culture forming the thematic foundations of the series. The following year, Sansom went on to represent Australia at the Indian Triennial in New Delhi.
