Jim Lambie creates wall installations that can also be experienced as three-dimensional paintings. While sculptural, his work always prioritises colour and its psychotropic effect on the viewer. Deeply influenced by his love of music, Lambie’s mixed-media sculptures and installations often combine found objects with vibrant hues.

Lambie’s father ran a mobile disco and his mother practised go-go dancing, experiences that continue to inform the psychedelic colours, rhythmic pulse and musicality of his work. Part of his 'Metal Box' series, Metal Box (You And Music) (2025) draws on colour theory and synaesthesia, equating the colour spectrum with the sound of music. Inspired by old, peeling music posters found in the streets and pubs of his native Glasgow, Lambie references Pop artists of the 1960s while exploring mass production, consumption and contemporary society, using bright, lyrical colours to create a sensual, rhythmic composition.
