Daruma is the Japanese name for Bodhidharma, the sage that brought Buddhism from India to China. Daruma is a popular design to put on kites. His likeness is also found on small dolls that are used to grant wishes, these dolls have no pupils painted on them when first purchased when wishes are granted the eyes are painted on.
