Woman from Knossos, 2016

Linda Marrinon’s works are informed by an enduring interest in feminism and art history, often underscored by a subtle, wry humour. Drawing on techniques associated with 19th-century figurative sculpture, Marrinon builds characters that seem to arrive from other worlds – figures shaped by Greek and Roman mythology, classic literature and the broader sweep of art history.

As with much of her work, Woman from Knossos hovers between archetype and intimate portrait: at once a relic of the past and a distinctly contemporary presence. Working in tinted plaster, Marrinon embraces a material traditionally associated with studies and preparatory models. The surface retains the immediacy of the artist’s hand – uneven, tactile and deliberately unresolved. Traces of colour cling to the form like fragments of memory, suggesting both excavation and reinvention.
