Baṯpa - the Reef, 2024
acrylic on bark
220 x 87 cm

Batpa - the Reef (2024) references Mununggurr's great- grandmother’s seafaring clan, the Warramirri, custodians of the Wessel Islands (a group of islands off Australia’s northern coast). Depicting Batpa (the reef), it features the clan emblem Narrpiya (the octopus) whose colour- changing ability mirrors the ocean’s volatility. Starfish, coral, crayfish, seaweed, fish and turtles tumble through the composition, reflecting both the abundance of marine life and the intrinsic connection between ancestral stories and Mununggurr's contemporary visual language.
