Hilarie Mais
Mais’ work reflects her long and deeply realized passion for the grid, the central trope of modernist art. The grid’s meaning, in both geometry and biology, are tested within an intensely realised aesthetic that is at once both formal and emotionally charged : the objective embodiment of the archetypal and the personal.
As hybrids between painting and sculpture, her works explore and develop the languages of both. Since the 1980’s Mais’s works have been in the post minimal stance, the result is the construction of meticulous and rigorous works about order and restraint. The formality of her works are underpinned by an organic and intimate sensibility, the handmade quality of the works functions to personalise, empathising the presence of the artist; the autobiographical , the ‘feminisation of minimalism’
