Untitled (EBIR), 2019
oil, charcoal and archival glue on paper mounted to linen
31 x 23 cm

In this work, Untitled (EBIR), 2019, Boyd employs his signature use of darkness and archival glue 'lenses' to depict the mottled figure of an Egyptian pharaoh. Working in small scale, Boyd continues to contend with the most brutal excesses of imperial domination as he allows this pharaoh to fluctuate between visual obscurity and revelation—just as historical narratives elevate and occlude different truths. This is the final remaining work from Boyd's series of small scale paintings shown at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery's booth at Art Basel Hong Kong in 2019.
